Résumé de la Ie Rencontre scientifique de l’ASEB – Report on the Ist Symposium of the Swiss Society for Byzantine Studies

Le Musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Genève a accueilli du 8 au 10 mai 2025 la première Rencontre scientifique de l’Association suisse des études byzantines. Ce symposium interdisciplinaire et international, dont le titre était Byzance comme carrefour dans l’espace et le temps, s’est ouvert de manière festive avec la conférence inaugurale du Prof. Paul Magdalino sur « Burckhardt for Byzantinists ». Les deux journées qui ont suivi ont permis à quatorze chercheur(e)s et intervenant(e)s culturel(le)s de Suisse ou actifs/actives en Suisse de présenter des communications concernant, dans le domaine byzantin, le droit, la philosophie, l’histoire et l’histoire de l’art, l’archéologie, la littérature, l’étude des manuscrits, la théologie (dans une session conjointe avec le Groupe suisse d’études patristiques) et l’histoire du climat. Nous avons enfin pu profiter d’une visite guidée des Cabinets Janet Zakos et de la présentation commentée d’une sélection des collections byzantines du Musée, mise sur pied spécialement à l’occasion du colloque.Nous remercions le Musée d’Art et d’Histoire pour son généreux et magnifique soutien à l’organisation et au financement de cette manifestation. Un grand merci va également aux autres qui nous ont fait bénéficier de leur patronage : le Fonds national suisse, l’Académie suisse des sciences humaines et sociales, l’Association suisse pour l’étude de l’Antiquité, le projet ERC « This one there » de l’Université de Vienne (PI : Prof. Christophe Erismann) et la Faculté des lettres de l’Université de Genève.
Keynote Lecture by Prof. Paul Magdalino
Vom 8.–10. Mai 2025 fand im Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Genf das erste Symposium der Schweizerischen Gesellschaft für Byzantinische Studien statt. Diese interdisziplinäre und internationale Tagung mit dem Titel Byzanz als Knotenpunkt in Raum und Zeit wurde mit der Keynote «Burckhardt for Byzantinists» von Prof. Paul Magdalino feierlich eröffnet. An zwei weiteren Tagen wurden von schweizerischen oder in der Schweiz tätigen Forschenden und Kulturschaffenden vierzehn Beiträge zur byzantinischen Jurisprudenz, Philosophie, Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte, Archäologie, Literatur, Handschriftenkunde, Theologie (mit der Schweizerischen Patristischen Arbeitsgemeinschaft co-organisierte Session) und Klimageschichte präsentiert. Überdies kamen die Teilnehmenden in den Genuss einer Führung durch die Cabinets Janet Zakos und der Präsentation einer extra für diesen Anlass zusammengestellten Auswahl an Objekten aus der byzantinischen Sammlung des Museums.Wir danken dem Musée d’Art et d’Histoire für die grosszügige und grossartige organisatorische und finanzielle Unterstützung. Ein grosses Dankeschön richtet sich zudem an alle weiteren Sponsoren: den Schweizerischen Nationalfonds, die Schweizerische Akademie der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften und die Schweizerische Vereinigung für Altertumswissenschaft, das ERC-Projekt «This one there» der Universität Wien (PI: Prof. Christophe Erismann) sowie die Philosophische Fakultät der Universität Genf.

Dall’8 al 10 maggio 2025, il Musée d’Art et d’Histoire di Ginevra ha ospitato il primo Incontro scientifico della Società svizzera di studi bizantini. Il simposio, di carattere interdisciplinare e internazionale e dedicato a Bisanzio come crocevia nello spazio e nel tempo, è stato inaugurato, in un’atmosfera festosa, dalla conferenza del Prof. Paul Magdalino, dal titolo «Burckhardt for Byzantinists». Nel corso delle due giornate successive, quattordici studiosi ed esperti di varia formazione provenienti dalla Svizzera o attivi nel contesto accademico svizzero hanno presentato contributi afferenti a diversi ambiti della ricerca bizantina: diritto, filosofia, storia e storia dell’arte, archeologia, letteratura, manoscritti bizantini, teologia (quest’ultima nell’ambito di una sessione congiunta con il Gruppo svizzero di studi patristici), fino a toccare la storia del clima. Il programma è stato arricchito da una visita guidata ai Cabinets Janet Zakos e dalla presentazione dettagliata di una selezione di artefatti provenienti dalla collezione bizantina del Museo, appositamente preparata ed esposta in occasione del convegno.La Società desidera esprimere la propria sincera gratitudine al Musée d’Art et d’Histoire per la calorosa accoglienza ed il generoso sostegno, essenziali per l’organizzazione ed il finanziamento dell’evento. From 8 to 10 May 2025, The Museum of Art and History in Geneva hosted the first Symposium of the Swiss Society for Byzantine Studies. Entitled Byzantium as a Hub in Space and Time, this interdisciplinary and international symposium, was opened in a festive atmosphere with the keynote lecture “Burckhardt for Byzantinists”, delivered by Prof. Paul Magdalino. Over the following two days, fourteen scholars and experts from Switzerland, or working within the Swiss academic context, presented papers on various topics in the field of Byzantine studies, including law, philosophy, history and art history, archaeology, literature, manuscript studies, theology (in a joint session with the Swiss Patristic Studies Group), as well as climate history. The program was enriched by a visit to the Cabinets Janet Zakos and a presentation of selected artefacts from the Museum’s Byzantine collections, arranged and displayed specifically for the conference.The organizers would like to express their deepest gratitude to the Museum of Art and History for its generous and invaluable support in organizing and financing the event. Sincere thanks are also due to the other institutions whose patronage contributed to the success of the meeting, namely the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Swiss Society for Ancient Studies, the ERC project “This one there” at the University of Vienna (PI: Prof. Christophe Erismann), and the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Geneva.
